The Northshire Bookstore

By admin • Jan 29th, 2007 • Category: Diversions

Rated the number one independent bookstore by Publisher’s Weekly in 2006, the Northshire Bookstore is one of the main reasons why visitors come to Manchester and continue returning.

Settled in the middle of town at the junction of 7A and Routes 11/30, affectionately termed malfunction junction, the Northshire is easy to find and has an abundance of parking. With the appearance of an old inn, the Northshire has a welcoming feel, complete with old exposed beams and rough wood bookcases that add to the rustic feel.

Though not as large as Borders or Barnes and Noble, the Northshire has an impressive collection of books, cozy corners around every turn, and a steady stream of author events. Gift sections, bargain books, greeting cards, and a respectable music section round out the pleasant first floor.

Deserving its own post, the children’s section on the second floor may very well be the best children’s book store in America. There is an abundance of books, bean bags, educational materials, stuff animals, and every other item a child could want, not to mention a section full of board games.

Dotted throughout the store stand carts filled with recently acquired used books, a mainstay of the Northshire throughout its history.

An interesting book or magazine may be perused in the Spiral Press Cafe, a separate business that Northshire customers may use at their leisure.

Above all, the staff of the Northshire love books. No matter what the section, there is a knowledgeable staff member on hand. Employee recommendations cover the shelves. A staff member is never far away and all exhibit the high standards that has made the Northshire one of the best independent bookstores in America.
