The Road to Fayville and Glastenbury
By admin • Jan 29th, 2007 • Category: Hiking, Off the Beaten PathShaftsbury, Vermont has a wonderful collection of old roads that make for excellent walks in just about any season. For those who want a more secluded walk out in the woods bordering the Green Mountain Forest, I recommend the Glastenbury Road on the way to Fayville, an abandoned logging town.
From Shaftsbury, go north on 7A and turn right onto Old Depot Road. Turn right onto Maple Hill road. On the left there will be a home, set back from the road, where a local resident sugars in the winter. Check local papers for the sugar house open house typically in March. Look for a house with wood stacked out front when you go to visit. Maple syrup will be for sale during the open house.
Continue on Maple Hill road and it will change to Harrison road. Then turn right onto East road. Prepare to turn left onto Glastenbury road at a large house. Take this road until it ends.
Park at the end of the road, but be sure to not block anyone’s driveway or access to the trail for other vehicles.
The old road winds through the woods and gradually ascends until it reaches a clearing after roughly 45-55 minutes of walking. The historic road is filled with side trails and is lined with old stone walls, most likely hailing back to Vermont’s days as pastureland.

The description of the Fayville/Glastenbury Road sounded great, so I set out today to try to find it and go for a hike, but no luck! I was hoping someone could clarify directions.
I drove a long way on Glastenbury Road and didn’t find a clear end - just smaller and smaller dirt roads leading to a set of camps. I finally hit a yard next to “Old Gale Road,” but all the paths still seemed to lead to homes. Did I go too far? Thanks for the help!
